BIGBIRD's First thoughts on the Wii

have a lil extra time today so i thought i might give my opinons on the Wii console...

First out the box the Wii to me looked like an expensive center piece for your living room table .Perhaps as a conversation piece with its lil see thro stand and its Angled Postured. And it seems that there isnt much to this thing. The biggest pain i had with setting it up was "Where in the hell do i put this sensor bar" after that It was pretty simple.
I was kindda upset that it doesnt have any type of High def support for it as well as no "REAL" Storage yes it has some Flash storage but nothing like its two BIG brothers. So after spending about 20 min taking it outta the box and outta its Protective gear. I got it setup and proceeded to turn it on.
When it powered up it takes me to a Dashboard type interface with all these different channels.Took me about another 10 min's to get it connected to my WiFi and off to the Wii internet i went . I started to look into different channels for my dashboard and found that i would have to pay for some of them....BOGUS....These things should be free.Well after my disguss in the fact that i have to pay for things that i think should be free i continued to poke around the Dash Board.
I went on the long search of lookin for my Wii number wich in itself is the most retarded idea ever concieved.A social security number for a console.Hell I cant even remeber my own SS number. Now you say i need to remeber two....Yet another strike against this console.
So as i continue Struggling at the Wii dashboard with the damn Wiimote b.c the damn thing keeps jumping around on me.I went ahead and proceeded to play Wii sports.
When i started Wii sports there are warnings about move oblects outta your swingging range.I SUGGEST THAT YOU TAKE HEED TO THAT WARNING.Because i busted my damn hand several times on our coffee table and believe me Wood never forgives.
After cursing the table i moved it and my girl got up and said WHY IN THE HELL DID YOU MOVE THE TABLE....I didnt hear her b.c i was a swing deep in tennis so she moved it back and again i smashed my daman hand.....
Continueing on I feel the Wii to be a gimick...the motion sensing is very nice with it but not worth the Price tag to have such a poor library of games....I find that the Downloads from thier version of a marketplace will be the only reason i ever turn it on.Its just not captivating me and winning me over.there are only a few things that i liked about the Wii.And I think the Idea of owning a Wii is better than actually owning a Wii.
So here are a few things that i like about it
1. Motion sensing
2. the ability to just insert a gamecube disc and it played it
3. the built in Wifi
And here are things i dislike about it
1.Wii numbers
2. ATM poor library of games
3.Sensor Bar(thing never stays in place even with the stickers)
4. the fact that i need 10' of space to play it
5.The fact that immovable objects will hurt when you swing.
6.no HD
7. No friends list(similar to XBL)
So the fact is that i think his console is good for age ranges from about 5 to 14 or so after that it becomes a waste of time.I am so glad that i didnt have to buy it and Knowing what i know now about it I would have kicked my own ass for buying one if i have in fact bought one.
I can see now that the Wii was built to get ppl into gaming that never have before and for the Casual gamer a person that may only play ggames when shit gets really really boring for them. But overall I can see alot of potential coming from the next one if Nitendo listens to uis consumers and get with the program.

Great thoughts and extremely accurate in my opinion. I felt the same way. One other issue I have had, is that my Wii wont pick up my WiFi and I have yet to get online with it. I am waiting for San Francisco to get city wide WiFi so maybe it will pick that up. My PS3 and 360 have no trouble picking it up. The first year I had the Wii I did not have people over where the Wii did not get turned on. It is very social and easy to pick up and play, n learning curve.

Anyway, thanks bird for posting this!

That is a great review! Nicely done Birdman....

I concur on the sensor bar as it never stays on my TVs an when I put it on top of my TV, there is a good deal of lag. When I put it on the bottom, it constantly falls off.

As for the Wii itself, its cool that Nintendo put out a product but honestly, I would never play more then what I call 'party games' on it. Its fun for a crowd but I think that is about all. I can see Guitar Hero, Tennis, Golf, etc. being about as much fun on it as anything. Maybe some skateboard/snowboard game that you can play with the wii fit.

All in all, the motion sensing side of things is clearly the draw here. Nothing more.

Great recap. I think my thoughts are inline with this review.

I totally agree with your review of the Wii. I got one right away as well and the only reason I turn it on is because I have downloaded a couple of old school games on to it.

Well. For the first year I thought a good amount of the games were great. I have about 20 or so games that I consider really good for the system....all but 2 were bought during the first year. then clones of these games came out and then just crap came out. So if you go back a little while there are some games that can keep you busy for a little while. As for chat. Its Nintendo. They do aim for the system to be all ages. To tell the truth I dont want my daughter to deal with the crap language that I deal with on live and PSN. (though isnt that what parental settings are for) Animal crossing will be introducing chat. As far as needing room to play yeah it can be kinda of a pain and damn when people walk by my window I gotta look stupid as crap when I play Wii boxing. By the way the sporatic jumping of the littlehand can sometimes be taken care of if you turn the volume down in the Wiimote. Worked for me anyhow. Some of the issues you have I too wish would be fixed. As far as games maybe if all the horrid games stopped coming out you may see the good ones that do make their way to the shelves.

Bird, haven't I been telling you exactly what you just wrote for months now? I always called the Wii a gimmick. Well, at least you got yours for free...

Thank you... you have just saved me from buying a Wii... I was thinking about it last night because I was remembering when I played Zelda in my N64... There is no real match for Zelda in the 360... and I though, well... what the hell... there HAS to be some other games besides Zelda.
But reading your review, I'm saving my hard earned dollars for other things.
Thxs again.

i'm glad to see opinions on the wii, and i will agree i use this system mostly for the virtual consel, but thankfully i have enough room in my place to fully be one with the wii. there are a few games that intrest me on the wii itself so i'm allright, and in my opinion i believe that if this system helps to get more people into video games then i defitly have no problem with the wii.

yeah, also agreed unless the hardcore gamer knows what their getting into to, then yeah defitly no recomandation for those true hardcore gamers. yeah let's get them addicted to the wii for the hardcore gamers kid so that when they are truly ready to play you can try to keep them away from some of the more non-appropite games until the age is right.

oh dont give me that shim sham result cause for one i like it and yes it has its draw back but wht console doesnt, i do think its for kids but on a note i think like a kid half the time to enjoy the humor it brings, but honestly everyone has made an investment they didnt like that excludes bird but wii is still NEW so there is plenty of time to favor over real hardcore gamers over, u dont have to love it as much as the others but u can admit that it does its job!
